Berkley, Somerset schools receive state support in regionalization

The recently approved Berkley-Somerset regional school district is receiving a state grant to aid in the transition.

Gov. Deval Patrick Thursday announced Berkley-Somerset will receive $75,000. The Ayer-Shirley school district, which was also approved this year, is receiving $300,000.

Brazil limits foreign land ownership

BRASILIA, Brazil (AP) — Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva has approved limits on how much land foreigners can own in Latin America's biggest country.

The restrictions say foreigners or Brazilian subsidiaries of foreign companies cannot own more than 5,000 hectares (12,350 acres). And no holding can be more than 25 percent of the total area of the municipality where the land is located.

SATURDAY FOOTBALL: Handicapping this weekend’s college games

We begin this week with a president, a coach and a scandal.

The year was 1969, the 100th anniversary of college football, and the latest incarnation of the; “Game of The Century,” was about to unfold. It pitted a pair of unbeatens; #1 Texas, coached by Darrell Royal against #2 Arkansas, coached by Frank Broyles. Originally scheduled for an October date, the powers at ABC Television, moved the game to the first weekend in December, making it the only game played that Saturday. It proved a wise decision, as the game was a ratings bonanza.

WASHINGTON (AP) — The number of illegal immigrants in the U.S. has dropped for the first time in 20 years as substantially fewer undocumented workers from Mexico, Latin America and elsewhere are crossing the border in search of jobs, an independent research group says.
